Levon (at the) Helm 1940 -2012
Thursday 19th April 2012 ...
I was really sad to hear about Levon Helm - he was a hero of mine - it's unreal that he left us on the
same day that I was playing at the Fillmore in San Fransisco, as this was where The Band performed
the Last Waltz. ........Thank you Levon for your incredible music ... your soul ... your smile ...
Back from the Gravy ...
Meanwhile back in Littlehampton I expect that Laughing Gravy will be running through a few more
Band tunes than usual.
and now - Bentley's Blog Proudly Presents ...
Call that Poetry? it doesn't even rhyme! ...
this poem - (inspired by Bentleys Blog!) - was composed by controversial artist Alan Card.
A sorta Lozenge of reality
The essence of Surreal realness
The clotted cream of desire astride
The baked potato of the esoteric
King Edward and the Jersey Royal
all mushed up and licentious in the same saucepan
Gosh its good to be sane ...

Squeeze - On the Buses ...
we often can't sleep after a gig - sometimes we end up just hanging out till the early hours
around our bunks on the bus -
it's just like a scene from Some Like it Hot
in my bunk after the gig - forgot to remove my make-up again!
... meanwhile back on tour of California ...
where was I? - ahhh yes - next stop across the state where it never rains and everyone's head is
full of air was Napa - where they tend to drink quite a bit of wine - but surprisingly none the
worse for wear -Stephen Large and myself made it on time for the gig after a local free wine
tasting session.
and so for the benefit of the wine connaisseurs amongst you - here is my description of the
Carbernet Sauvingnon:
... 'hints of dingleberry & dog blanket, an after taste of pork scratchings, notes of cheesy wotzits
in my Grannys knickers, after-tones of flurescent tobacco tins in B flat'... mmmmm yummy!
... the gig at the Uptown Theatre went on a bit - so with no end in sight I decided to throw a
double 6 - pick up £200 for passing Go - and arrived in San Fransisco before you could say
ibesn ripsbusker og andre busksvebster - then I went for a walk - Haight Ashbury? - no quite
liked it actually - thank you Simon for providing that joke - the atmosphere at the Fillmore is
magic and I was all vibed up for an epic event of Squeeze-Mungus Proportions -
the gig was filmed by BBC 4 for a "We Will We Will Rock U" mentary about Surprise Surprise ...
(no not about Surprise Surprise) but about - Squeeze! Surprise Surprise!
Simon Hanson has a go at drumming / composition / lead vocals / keyboards / film editing / sound
mixing / comedy script writing / websight creation / iPad artwork & design / and now camera man for
BBC 4!
next - ad nauseum ...

Hanson Jams with cardboard cut-out of Biggie!
well - he couldn't afford laser projection ...
Is your Coach Yella?
The organisers of the Coachella Festival realised that all they had to do to make twice as much
money was simply to repeat the whole thing again a week later. And next year its gonna
happen three times in a row! So here we all are again - all the same bands on the same stages
at the same times - so I still dont get to see Noel Gallagher play.
Oh there he is on close circuit TV!!
Turn on - Tune in - Drop dead! its 110 degrees out here!
But I dont understand why anybody would want to come to a music festival in the middle
of the desert. Maybe its so that when they get into their sleeping bags at night they're not
alone - they have rattlers and scorpions for company. Well whatever the case 160,000.00
people proved me wrong!
the TRUTH
... and then on we went into the night to catch a flight from LA to New York New York - so
good they named it twice. Staying at the Soho Grand is groovy. You never know who you
might run into. I was on my way out to grab a bite to eat when in walked Ronnie Wood.
He's an all time hero of mine and his bass playing on 'TRUTH' set me up. Let's face it - he's
a living Leg End! He told me that he had an exhibition of his paintings just around the
corner - I said Oh? neither have I ...
... and then the English Beat us up ...
it's really good to have the English Beat back to open up our show at Bergan PAC in Englewood
New Jersey. Those guys really know how to entertain a crowd, and by the time it's our turn to take
the stage - the audience are BEATen up into a frenzy of excitement ...
now I'm gonna make you an offer you can't understand ...
and they (the Mafia) said we'd never play in Jersey again - and yet here we are - I wonder if we'll get
outa here with our scalps in tact ... well we can always wear syrups I suppose. What's he mean
Mum?
can somebody PLEASE help me make sense of all this? ...
Hows my driving?
